WOMEN’S CONNECT: EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH PARLIAMENTARY EXPOSURE

🇬🇭 WOMEN’S CONNECT: EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH PARLIAMENTARY EXPOSURE

The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG), through the Office of the National Women’s Commissioner, has successfully organised an educational visit to the Parliament of Ghana on Thursday, 5th November 2026, as part of its commitment to promoting women's empowerment, leadership development and active participation in governance.

The initiative was organised under the inspiring theme:

“Inspiring Trainees for Governance and Leadership.”

Promoting Political Awareness and Democratic Participation

The parliamentary visit provided teacher trainees with a unique opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to the operations and responsibilities of Ghana's legislative arm of government. Participants had the opportunity to appreciate the parliamentary environment and develop a deeper understanding of how democratic institutions function in the governance and administration of the country.

Through this experience, the trainees were encouraged to recognise Parliament not merely as a place where laws are debated and passed, but also as an important institution where national policies are shaped, public interests are represented and decisions affecting the lives of citizens are made.

The visit further highlighted the importance of democratic participation, accountability, effective representation and responsible leadership in building a stronger and more inclusive society.

Empowering the Next Generation of Women Leaders

A central objective of the Women's Connect initiative was to inspire young women, particularly teacher trainees, to develop an interest in leadership and public service. By providing direct exposure to parliamentary governance, the initiative sought to challenge perceptions and encourage participants to see themselves as capable contributors to national development.

Women continue to play significant roles in education, community development, professional institutions and national affairs. However, meaningful representation in leadership and decision-making requires deliberate encouragement, equal opportunities, mentorship and the necessary exposure to leadership environments.

The programme therefore served as a reminder that leadership should not be limited by gender. Young women must be encouraged to participate confidently in student leadership, institutional administration, politics, public service and other spaces where important decisions are made.

Beyond the Classroom: Learning Through Experience

The educational visit also reinforced the importance of experiential learning in teacher training. While classroom instruction provides the theoretical foundation for understanding governance and citizenship, practical exposure allows trainees to connect academic knowledge with real-life institutional experiences.

As future educators, the participants are expected to play important roles in shaping the values, attitudes and civic consciousness of the next generation. Understanding democratic governance and inclusive leadership will therefore strengthen their ability to promote responsible citizenship, equality, participation and national development within their future classrooms and communities.

A Call to Action for Inclusive Leadership

The Women's Connect initiative goes beyond a parliamentary visit. It represents a broader commitment to creating opportunities for young women to discover their leadership potential, build confidence and become active participants in shaping the future of Ghana.

It is important that opportunities such as these are sustained through mentorship programmes, leadership training, institutional engagements and continuous advocacy for women's participation in decision-making.

The message remains clear: women must not only be encouraged to lead; they must also be equipped, empowered and provided with the opportunities and platforms necessary to make meaningful contributions.

Looking Ahead

Through initiatives such as Women's Connect, TTAG continues to demonstrate the importance of investing in the leadership capacity of teacher trainees. Empowering young women today is an investment in a future where leadership is more inclusive, governance is more representative and communities benefit from the contributions of all.

As the participants return from this educational engagement, the expectation is that the knowledge, inspiration and experiences gained will motivate them to become ambassadors of positive change in their respective colleges and communities.

Empowering Women. Inspiring Leadership. Transforming Society. 🇬🇭
