Government plans to build six regional hospitals for the six newly created regions.

The 2026 Budget Statement has made one thing clear: government is moving to strengthen healthcare delivery across the six newly created regions — and the Oti Region is directly included in this plan.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the government will begin the construction of six new regional hospitals for the six new regions. The rollout is expected to begin with three hospitals in 2026, followed by the remaining three. While two additional district hospitals will be built at Bole and Shama, the main highlight for the Oti Region is the promise of a modern regional hospital.

What This Means for the Oti Region

For residents of the Oti Region, this announcement brings major hope for improved healthcare access. As one of the newly created regions, Oti currently lacks a fully developed regional hospital capable of meeting growing health needs. This project means:

1. A New Regional Hospital Is Coming

Oti Region is one of the six beneficiaries, meaning that a brand-new, fully equipped regional hospital will be constructed for the area.

2. Improved Healthcare Services

The new hospital will likely include modern facilities such as:

  • Emergency and trauma care
  • Maternity and neonatal units
  • Surgical theatres
  • Diagnostic and laboratory services
  • Specialist outpatient clinics

These services will reduce the need for residents to travel long distances for advanced care.

3. More Jobs and Local Development

Construction and operation of the hospital will create jobs for nurses, doctors, technicians, administrative staff, and local artisans during construction. The project will stimulate the local economy and support broader community development.

4. Better Preparedness for Health Emergencies

A regional hospital strengthens the health system’s capacity to respond to disease outbreaks, accidents, and other emergencies — a key advantage for a growing region like Oti.

When Will Construction Start?

The government plans to start construction on three of the six regional hospitals in 2026, but it has not publicly confirmed which regions will be in the first batch. Regardless, the Oti Region is included among the six beneficiaries and can expect a regional hospital under this initiative.

A Step Toward Equity in Healthcare

This initiative is a major step toward ensuring that every region—old and new—receives fair access to quality healthcare infrastructure. For the Oti Region, the announcement marks the beginning of long-awaited progress that could transform health services for thousands of residents.
