Visit to Families Affected by Volta Lake Boat Accident

Statement by Hon. Helen Adwoa Ntoso, Member of Parliament for Krachi West

Yesterday, I joined a high-powered government delegation led by Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, to visit the families and communities affected by the tragic boat accident on the Volta Lake near Okumah in my beloved constituency.

The delegation included:

  • The Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe;
  • Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Policy Adviser (Political Affairs) at the Office of the Vice-President;
  • Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, the Head of NADMO;
  • Oti Regional Minister, Hon. John Kwadwo Gyapong;
  • The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Krachi West, Mr. Prosper Kwaku Addo;
  • Officials from the Ghana Maritime Authority;
  • Representatives of the security agencies.

The purpose of the visit was to commiserate with the bereaved families and assure them of government’s full support in this difficult time.

On behalf of the people of Krachi West, I expressed my profound gratitude to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama and the entire government for the compassion and prompt response shown to our grieving constituency.

As part of the visit, essential relief items and safety equipment were presented to affected families to provide immediate relief and to reinforce the importance of safety in water transport.

I also used the opportunity to reiterate the need for strict adherence to safety protocols on our water bodies. Boat operators must ensure that all passengers wear life jackets and that boats are not overloaded under any circumstance.

May the souls of the departed rest peacefully, and may the Almighty comfort the bereaved families.

From My Perspective

Witnessing the devastation firsthand was truly heartbreaking. The community’s pain was palpable, yet their strength and unity were deeply inspiring. The visit reaffirmed the importance of community solidarity in the face of tragedy and the role of leadership in providing comfort and tangible support to those affected.

As a representative of the people, I remain committed to ensuring that every necessary measure is taken to prevent such tragedies in the future. We must continue to advocate for improved safety standards, proper training for boat operators, and the provision of life-saving equipment across all communities that rely on water transport.

Let us all continue to pray for healing, strength, and safety for the people of Krachi West and beyond.
