Introduction
The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has become a cornerstone of Ghana’s educational transformation, funding thousands of projects, scholarships, and policies to expand access to quality education across the country. In 2025, major announcements and strategic reforms have reignited public interest in how GETFund operates and what it means for students, educators, and institutions alike.
Uncapping the Fund: A New Era of Possibilities
For years, the Ghanaian government placed a cap on GETFund allocations, limiting its ability to fully support educational needs. But in 2025, the government removed the cap on GETFund, instantly unlocking GH¢4.1 billion in funds. This move has had a powerful impact, especially on the implementation of Free SHS and financial aid programs:
- GH¢3.5 billion allocated to support the Free SHS initiative
- GH¢499.8 million reserved for the “No Academic Fee” policy for students
- Significant support for persons with disabilities in tertiary institutions
Student Loans Doubled: From GH¢70m to GH¢150m
Another major win came when Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced that GETFund would double its allocation to the Students' Loan Trust Fund (SLTF). This means the loan budget increased from GH¢70 million to GH¢150 million for the 2025/2026 academic year.
This expanded funding will:
- Provide financial support to more students, including those in private tertiary institutions
- Improve the speed of loan disbursements
- Ensure broader coverage under the “No Fees Stress” program
Student Loan vs. "No Fees Stress" – What’s the Difference?
While both initiatives aim to ease the financial burden of tertiary education, they serve different purposes:
- Student Loan: This is a repayable loan given to tertiary students to cover fees, accommodation, or other academic expenses. Repayment begins after graduation or upon employment.
- No Fees Stress: This is a government-backed intervention that pays part or all of a student's academic fees upfront—without expecting repayment. It is designed to help freshers who may not be able to afford entrance fees.
In short: “Student Loan” must be paid back; “No Fees Stress” does not require repayment. The two are complementary, giving students flexible pathways to stay in school.
A New Law to Clean Up Scholarships
In response to long-standing concerns about favoritism in scholarship distribution, the Ministry of Education is preparing to present the Scholarship Authority Bill to Parliament. The bill aims to create a more transparent and merit-based system for awarding educational scholarships, ending issues of nepotism and political influence in GETFund scholarship awards.
3,000+ Projects Completed: Infrastructure that Transforms
Since 2017, GETFund has completed over 3,000 educational projects nationwide. These include:
- Classroom blocks and dormitories for SHS and basic schools
- Furniture and equipment for schools in deprived areas
- Vehicles and mobility support for educational directorates
This massive investment in infrastructure ensures that more students have access to safe, well-equipped learning environments.
Governance: A Stronger Board of Trustees
In April 2025, a new 17-member Board of Trustees was inaugurated to oversee GETFund’s operations. The board is made up of representatives from institutions such as:
- Ministry of Education
- Ghana Education Service (GES)
- Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA)
- Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC)
- Teacher Unions
Their goal is to boost accountability, enhance project delivery, and ensure equitable access to funding across the country.
Public Alert: Beware of Scams
As GETFund's visibility and funding increase, so have fraudulent attempts to deceive the public. The Fund has warned Ghanaians about scams involving fake recruitment and contract offers. Citizens are advised to only use official GETFund communication channels and report any suspicious messages.
Conclusion: A Lifeline for the Future
GETFund continues to be one of Ghana’s most powerful tools in the quest for equal, accessible, and quality education. With more funding, better governance, and legislative reforms on the way, it is becoming a true engine for national development. As the 2025/2026 academic year approaches, students, educators, and families alike can look to GETFund as a symbol of opportunity and progress.
