Parliament Approves Chief Justice Nominee Baffoe-Bonnie — 163 MPs Vote ‘Yes’, 69 Vote ‘No’ Ahead of 2026 Budget Reading
Ghana’s Parliament has officially approved the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana. The historic vote took place just days before the presentation of the 2026 National Budget.
After a heated session in Parliament, 163 Members of Parliament voted in favour of his appointment, while 69 voted against. The decision followed weeks of vetting, debates, and committee assessments of the nominee’s record and judicial philosophy.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, a seasoned jurist and long-serving member of the Supreme Court, was nominated following the retirement of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Lawmakers described his appointment as crucial for ensuring continuity and stability within the judiciary.
His confirmation sets the stage for an official swearing-in ceremony by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The judiciary and legal community have expressed optimism that his leadership will strengthen institutional independence and enhance justice delivery.
The vote occurred ahead of the much-anticipated 2026 Budget presentation, adding a layer of political and administrative significance to the timing of his approval.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s judicial career spans over three decades, having served in various capacities — from the High Court to the Court of Appeal and later the Supreme Court. He is known for his meticulous approach to constitutional matters and commitment to fairness.
As Ghana looks forward to his official induction, citizens and stakeholders are hopeful for reforms aimed at improving judicial transparency and efficiency.
