How UDS Grade Points Work: A Sample Results Table, Explained
UDS evaluates students with a Grade Point Average (GPA) each semester and a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) across your whole programme.
The grading scale
The score bands below are consistent across the sources I found, and the grade points are the standard 4.0 mapping. Confirm them against your faculty’s handbook.
| Score (%) | Grade | Grade Points |
|---|---|---|
| 80-100 | A | 4.0 |
| 75-79 | B+ | 3.5 |
| 70-74 | B | 3.0 |
| 65-69 | C+ | 2.5 |
| 60-64 | C | 2.0 |
| 55-59 | D+ | 1.5 |
| 50-54 | D | 1.0 |
| Below 50 | E | 0.0 |
A sample results table
This is a made-up first-semester result. The courses and scores are illustrative.
| Course | Credit Hours | Score | Grade | Grade Points | Quality Points (GP × Credits) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Introduction to Development Studies | 3 | 82 | A | 4.0 | 12.0 |
| Communication Skills | 3 | 74 | B | 3.0 | 9.0 |
| Introduction to Statistics | 3 | 67 | C+ | 2.5 | 7.5 |
| Basic Economics | 3 | 62 | C | 2.0 | 6.0 |
| Introduction to Sociology | 2 | 57 | D+ | 1.5 | 3.0 |
| Computer Literacy | 2 | 77 | B+ | 3.5 | 7.0 |
| Total | 16 | 44.5 |
Semester GPA = 44.5 ÷ 16 = 2.78
Interpreting the results
1. A GPA of 2.78 is a solid middle-of-the-pack result. For a bachelor’s degree, the classification bands reported for UDS are First Class at 3.6-4.00, Second Class Upper at 3.0-3.59, Second Class Lower at 2.5-2.99, Third Class at 2.0-2.49, and Pass at 1.1-1.99. If this student held 2.78 until graduation, they would land in Second Class Lower. The student is passing everything, but there is room to climb. colemanpublications
2. Credit hours carry the weight. Statistics (3 credits, C+) and Sociology (2 credits, D+) are the two weakest results, but Statistics drags the GPA down more because it has more credits.
3. The gap to Second Class Upper is small. To reach 3.0, this student would need about 48 quality points over 16 credits, which is only 3.5 more. Raising Sociology from D+ to C+ would add 2 points, and lifting Statistics from C+ to B would add 1.5.
4. Watch the borderlines. A 57 in Sociology is just 2 marks from a C+. If you’re a few marks below a band edge, it’s worth asking about a script review.
5. Your CGPA is cumulative. After each semester, add up all your quality points and all your credits, then divide. Early semesters count as much as later ones, so a weak first year can be hard to fully recover from.
Quick tips
- Put extra effort into high-credit courses.
- Aim to keep every grade at C or above, since D+ and D drag the average down quickly.
- Track your CGPA every semester instead of waiting for final year.
- Check the handbook for your own faculty, because rules differ between programmes and for postgraduate students, who have a separate scale.
