If you are thinking of joining the classroom, or you already teach and want to know what the next rank is worth, this guide breaks down what Ghana Education Service (GES) teachers are paid at each level, using the figures most recently reported in 2026.
How teacher pay works
Teachers in public schools are paid under the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS), which applies to all public sector workers and is managed by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. Two things decide your pay: your level on the spine (Level 1 up to Level 25) and your rank in the GES, which is tied to your qualification, years of service and promotions.
The spine was last given a major boost in 2023, when base pay rose by 30 percent along with a 15 percent market premium for public sector workers (Citi Newsroom).
Where you start: degree vs diploma
Your entry rank depends on your qualification.
- Degree holders enter as Principal Superintendent (Level 16.1H).
- Diploma holders enter as Senior Superintendent II (Level 14.1H).
GES has also signalled that it is moving away from accepting the diploma as the basic requirement for teaching, so upgrading to a degree is increasingly important (GESHub).
Salary by rank (monthly, GH₵)
These are reported 2026 figures at Step 1 of each level (Tmmotiongh, Aug 2026). "Gross" includes the 15% market premium; "net" is estimated take-home after social security and income tax.

In annual terms, a new degree teacher earns roughly GH₵54,298 in basic pay, while a new diploma teacher earns roughly GH₵42,884 (Coleman Publications).
The climb: promotions
The usual path for a classroom teacher runs from Principal Superintendent to Assistant Director II, then Assistant Director I, then Deputy Director. Promotion is based on years of service, performance appraisals, and in some cases a promotion aptitude test. Heads of senior high schools typically sit at Deputy Director rank (Level 20.1), with extra responsibility sometimes placing them one scale higher. Each promotion moves you to a higher level, which raises both basic pay and allowances (Coleman Publications, GESHub).
What the numbers leave out
Before you plan your finances around the table, keep these caveats in mind:
- Allowances are not included. Relief, night duty, fuel and rent allowances are separate and vary by role and posting.
- Figures are entry points. They reflect Step 1 of each level, so a teacher with more years on the same level may earn more.
- Net pay varies. Your actual take-home depends on your deductions and any later salary adjustments.
- Sources differ. The rank figures above come from third-party reports, not an official GES notice, so confirm your own level with your payslip or the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.
What is changing
Teacher unions say pay still lags behind the role. In May 2026, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) called for an immediate review of the Single Spine Pay Policy at its national conference. It also urged the government to deliver on a 20 percent monthly allowance for teachers in deprived areas, to publish a clear annual timetable for promotion tests, and to start promotions for eligible staff (Ghana News Agency). Watch these developments, since any of them could change what you take home.
The bottom line
A newly posted teacher in Ghana can expect roughly GH₵3,300 to GH₵4,100 a month after deductions, depending on whether they enter with a diploma or a degree. Climbing to Assistant Director II pushes that to around GH₵4,900, and the very top GES posts reach above GH₵11,000. For most teachers, the fastest route to a bigger pay cheque is a degree, steady appraisals, and getting through promotion exams on time.
Figures are based on 2026 reports and may change with new salary negotiations. Always verify against official GES or Fair Wages and Salaries Commission publications.
