Ghana Secures US$12.83 Million African Development Bank Grant to Advance Feasibility Studies for Key Big Push Programme Projects

Ghana Advances Big Push Programme with US$12.83 Million AfDB Grant

Earlier today, a major milestone was achieved in Ghana’s infrastructure and industrial development agenda with the signing of a US$12.83 million grant agreement with the African Development Bank (AfDB). The grant will finance critical feasibility studies for priority projects under the Government’s Big Push Programme, laying the groundwork for accelerated construction and economic transformation.

The funded projects span key sectors—transport, markets, and agro-industrial development—and are strategically located to deliver broad national impact.

Priority Projects Covered

The grant will support feasibility studies for the following initiatives:

1. Transport Infrastructure

  • Proposed Interchange at the 37 Military Hospital
This project aims to significantly ease traffic congestion, improve road safety, and enhance mobility within one of Accra’s busiest transport corridors.

2. Market Redevelopment Projects

  • Agbogbloshie Market

  • Techiman Market

  • Sekondi Market

  • Mankessim Market

These market redevelopment projects are designed to modernise trading spaces, improve sanitation and safety, and boost local commerce while enhancing livelihoods for traders and surrounding communities.

3. Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZs)

  • Afram Plains

  • Nsawam

  • Builsa

The proposed SAPZs will strengthen agro-processing, reduce post-harvest losses, create jobs, and promote value addition across Ghana’s agricultural value chains.

What the Funding Will Support

The AfDB grant will finance comprehensive feasibility studies, including:

  • Detailed engineering designs

  • Full project costings

  • Environmental and social impact assessments

These components are essential to ensure the projects are technically sound, environmentally sustainable, socially responsible, and fully prepared for construction.

Strong Partnerships for Sustainable Development

Gratitude is extended to the African Development Bank and its Country Manager, Ms. Eyerusalem Fasika, for their continued partnership and steadfast support. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to Ghana’s long-term development goals and inclusive economic growth.

Looking Ahead

The overarching objective is to complete these feasibility studies promptly, enabling construction to commence as soon as possible. Once implemented, these projects are expected to stimulate economic activity, create employment opportunities, and significantly improve infrastructure across multiple regions.

The Big Push Programme remains a central pillar of Ghana’s development strategy—focused on bold investments that deliver lasting impact for communities and the nation as a whole.
