The Ghana National Fire Service will launch a nationwide compliance exercise to ensure that every vehicle on the road is equipped with a functional, easily accessible, and GNFS-certified or embossed portable fire extinguisher, "the Service said in a press release dated December 16.

The taskforce will conduct on-the-spot checks, issue checks, issue certification tags for approved extinguishers and offer technical advice on proper use in line with Ghana National Fire Service Act, 1997 (Act 537)

The GNFS will also engage transport unions and associations to educate drivers and vehicle owners on extinguisher maintenance and safe mounting.

"Every second counts when fire breaks out in a vehicle, and a certified working fire extinguisher within arm's reach can make the difference between a minor scare and a tragic loss," the statement noted.
