Driver’s Mate Jailed Three Months for Stealing Phone and Posting Selfies on Victim’s WhatsApp
A 27-year-old driver’s mate, Edem Avenyo, has been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by the Gbese District Court after being found guilty of stealing a mobile phone and misusing it in an unusual manner that led to his arrest.
Incident at Tema Station
According to court records, the incident occurred at the Tema Station in Accra, where Avenyo stole a mobile phone belonging to a commercial driver. In addition to the phone, the accused was also reported to have taken an amount of GH¢7,000 from the victim during the same incident.
Unaware that his actions would quickly expose him, Avenyo proceeded to use the stolen phone to take photographs of himself. He then posted the selfies directly on the victim’s WhatsApp status, an act that immediately raised alarm among the victim’s contacts.
Arrest and Prosecution
The unusual activity on the WhatsApp account alerted the phone’s owner, who promptly reported the matter to the police. Investigations were launched, leading to the arrest of the suspect at his hideout.
Avenyo was subsequently charged with stealing and arraigned before the Gbese District Court. During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence linking him to the stolen phone and the unauthorized WhatsApp posts.
Court Ruling
After considering the facts of the case, the court found Avenyo guilty and sentenced him to three months in prison. The ruling served as a warning against theft and the misuse of personal digital devices, especially in an era where technology can easily trace criminal activity.
Public Reaction and Lessons
The case has drawn public attention due to the suspect’s careless actions, which many described as avoidable. Legal analysts say the incident highlights how digital footprints and social media activity can quickly expose criminal behaviour.
Authorities have advised the public to remain vigilant and safeguard their personal belongings, while urging offenders to understand that technology often works against criminal intentions rather than in their favour.
