Big Relief Coming? Haruna Iddrisu Hints at Overhaul of Student Loan Interest”

Haruna Iddrisu on Student-Loan Interest

Minister Haruna Iddrisu has raised concerns about the current practice of charging compound interest on student loans, calling it unfair—especially for graduates who are unemployed or underemployed.

He indicated the government is reviewing the interest policy and exploring changes such as moving from compound interest to a simpler model. The aim is to make repayment more manageable while protecting the sustainability of the Student Loan Trust Fund.

At the same time, the government is increasing funding to the Student Loan Trust Fund and considering expanding loan access to students at private tertiary institutions. Any final policy must balance fairness to graduates with the fund’s long-term viability.

Why it matters: changes could reduce the repayment burden for many young people and affect how the student loan scheme is financed going forward.
